Most backyards are underused. A plain stretch of grass or a neglected patch of dirt - nothing that makes you actually want to spend time out there. What we love about jobs like this one is getting to flip that completely. A space that felt forgettable becomes somewhere you genuinely look forward to being.
The centerpiece here is a multi-tiered boulder waterfall surrounded by river rock and smooth pebble gravel. The sound alone changes the whole feel of the yard. Water moving over natural stone creates something you can't fake with a string of lights or a new patio set. It brings a calm that hits you the second you step outside.
From the waterfall, a stepping stone path winds through a freshly designed garden bed - and this is where the planting design really shines. We worked in ornamental grasses, hydrangeas, flowering perennials like phlox and geraniums, hostas, and low-growing shrubs. The variety keeps the bed interesting across different heights and textures without feeling cluttered. Deep black mulch across the entire bed ties everything together and makes every plant pop.
The stepping stones aren't just functional - they give the whole garden a natural, meandering feel. It pulls you through the space rather than just around it. That's intentional. Good landscape design isn't just about what something looks like from a distance. It's about how it feels to actually move through it.
A project like this combines several things we do - landscape design, garden bed installation, planting, and mulch bed design - all working together as one cohesive space. When each element is planned to complement the others, the result isn't just a nice yard. It's a place you actually want to be.
